I don’t know whether to blame pregnancy brain or what, but apparently I never wrote an update for week 24, so I guess I’ll have to make a joint week 24 and 25. I guess in these later stages not much changes on a week-to-week basis either, so they kind of blur together.
Anyway, let’s start with:
Baby (Week 24): Length 30 cm, Weight 600 grams
During this week baby’s hair is beginning to change to the color that it will have at birth. The baby’s weight will double in the next four weeks. The lungs are developing and preparing for their first breaths. They’re also producing a substance called surfactant that helps in keeping the lungs from collapsing or sticking together during exhalation. Loud noises may startle the baby, causing a sudden jolt. Due to baby’s growth, space in your uterus is getting reduced even further.
Baby (Week 25): Length 34,6 cm, Weight 660 grams
Baby’s primitive memory is beginning to develop, implying that music and voices will be leaving an impression on the little one’s brain. Baby’s spine has 1000 ligaments, 150 joints and 33 vertebrae. Blood vessels are busy developing inside the lungs and nostrils are beginning to open. Now that baby has fully developed hands, loud noises may prompt baby to cover its tiny ears to shield them from sounds. The baby’s skin has now changed from translucent to a more opaque in appearance. The cerebral cortex, the part of baby’s brain that is responsible for emotions, reasoning, planning and ability to solve problems, is the most prominent part of the brain at this point.
During week 24 I started noticing the fact that sometimes, when walking, my shins started to hurt. I’ve always had sensitive shins, at least as a grown up. Running has been horrible at times, it’s like the muscles around there or ligaments are really tightening up and it feels like a cramp of sorts. It’s horrible, does anyone else have this problem? It’s been continuously difficult to breath, I get out of breath so damn easily; this has been going on for a few weeks. At the end of this week I started noticing that I could see like ”vibrations” and ripples on my stomach when Mini moved, which was so cool. D saw it too and by now, he’s felt quite a lot of the kicks. I love this feeling, I got to admit it.
At times I’ve felt huge and at other times I’ve felt better. These bodily changes aren’t super easy, even though I’m not huge by any standards yet. Having struggled with body image and food for a long time, it’s not always easy being pregnant. It’s been psychologically difficult, more than physically lately. I’m dealing though and most of the time I’m enjoying it. At this point of the pregnancy I’ve felt pretty good, the energy is better (even if it goes up and down). I haven’t struggled with lower back pains at all lately, so that has been great. I try to go easy on myself, but it’s easier said than done. Creatively, with clothes/fashion, it’s been a struggle, too. I’ve been rather envious of my colleagues who have been able to buy beautiful spring fashion items and have been looking fresh and all that. While I’ve felt very much ”the same” all the time; dressing in black and switching between two pair of jeans and two pair of tights and basically the same kind of sweaters. I’ve felt very boring and feeling kind of ”big and clunky” hasn’t exactly inspired a shopping spree either, even though buying some maternity stuff or new, bigger sizes, probably would’ve helped.
During week 25 the kicks got stronger and I was able to tell whenever Mini made a turn. I even felt kicks in two places at once, probably meaning that Mini kicked with different body parts, like an elbow and a knee. It’s still such an amazing feeling and I enjoy it so much. It’s definitely my favorite part about being pregnant.
I felt a bit more stable and more comfortable in my body this week. Even though my pre-pregnancy jeans gave out during the end of this week. Haha. It was bound to happen, wasn’t it? It (surprisingly) didn’t make me feel too bad. This might be a bit TMI, at the same time I want to be honest with you guys. But at the end of week 24 and beginning of week 25 (or if it was mainly during week 24, I don’t remember) my libido was at an all time high. Much higher than it normally is, which felt like a relief and a very good and enjoyable thing for the both of us.
During both weeks I’ve also felt Braxton Hicks contractions, they haven’t been painful or anything though. It mostly just feels like your belly tightens and becomes hard for like a minute. It’s pretty fascinating that the body knows that it has to get ready for the real deal.
